Class 4 impact-resistant shingles: the Texas math

What the rating means, what the insurance discount is worth in Montgomery County, what it costs, and which shingles actually qualify.

A Class 4 shingle is an asphalt shingle that passed UL 2218: a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet, twice on the same spot, with no crack in the mat. That's roughly the energy of a 2-inch hailstone. Standard shingles crack; Class 4 shingles — usually made with SBS-modified (rubberized) asphalt that flexes — don't. It's the single most useful roofing upgrade for a county that sees hail every spring.

The insurance discount

Texas insurers offer a premium discount for UL 2218 Class 4 roofs, applied to the wind-and-hail portion of the premium. The size varies by carrier and by how your policy is rated, but on Montgomery County policies it commonly lands between 10 and 30 percent of that portion — for most homeowners, $150 to $500 a year, and more on high-value homes. To get it, your roofer gives you the manufacturer's certification (a form stating the product and its UL 2218 rating) and you send it to your agent. Some carriers also want the invoice and a photo of the bundle wrapper. Ask your agent for the exact number before you choose — we'll give you the form either way.

The cost

On a typical 2,200–2,600 square-foot Conroe home, Class 4 adds $2,000 to $4,000 over a standard 30-year architectural shingle in 2026 — a Class 4 roof runs $13,500 to $23,000 installed. Against a $150-to-$500 annual discount, the upcharge pays back in four to eight years on premium alone, before counting the hailstorm it shrugs off that would have totaled a standard roof and cost you another deductible.

Which shingles qualify

The ones we install most: Owens Corning Duration FLEX, GAF Timberline AS II, Malarkey Vista AR and Legacy, CertainTeed NorthGate ClimateFlex, Atlas StormMaster Shake and Slate, and TAMKO Titan XT. All are UL 2218 Class 4; they differ in weight, color range, warranty terms and algae resistance. In The Woodlands, Woodforest and the other covenant communities we match the approved color palettes from within these lines.

What it survives — and doesn't

Quarter, half-dollar and golf-ball hail: usually fine, with cosmetic granule scuffing at most. Baseball hail: damage likely, less than a standard shingle. Softball hail: everything is damaged. Class 4 is also not a wind rating — that's separate (most architectural shingles are rated 110 or 130 mph with proper nailing), and it doesn't change how the shingle ages in the sun. It buys you the hail.

One caution on 'cosmetic' language

A few Texas carriers have begun adding endorsements that exclude cosmetic hail damage on impact-resistant roofs — the logic being that a Class 4 roof that took hail without cracking isn't functionally damaged. Read the endorsement before you accept the discount; we'll go through it with you.

Related questions

Do all insurers in Texas give a Class 4 discount?

Nearly all of the major carriers do, and Texas Department of Insurance guidance has encouraged it for years. The amount and the paperwork differ; ask your agent before the roof goes on so you can pick the shingle that fits the form.

Is a metal roof Class 4?

Many stone-coated steel products are UL 2218 Class 4 rated; bare standing-seam and R-panel steel is often rated but dents cosmetically, and many policies now exclude cosmetic damage on metal. Check both before choosing metal for the discount.

Do I need a new roof to get the discount?

Yes — the whole roof covering has to be Class 4. There's no partial credit for replacing one slope.

Will Class 4 shingles look different?

No. They come in the same architectural profiles and colors as the standard lines; nobody can tell from the street.

How do I prove it later, when I sell?

Keep the certification, the invoice and a photo of the bundle wrapper. Buyers' insurers ask for the same paperwork you gave yours.

Is Class 3 good enough?

Class 3 (1.75-inch ball) is better than nothing but most carriers reserve the meaningful discount for Class 4, and the price difference between the two is small. Go to 4.

Hail season starts in March. Get the roof looked at first.
